My name is Victoria Elligsen, and I’m pursuing a bachelor of science, double major in history and anthropology, with a concentration in archaeology at Oregon State University. I grew up on the Oregon Coast, which has informed my marine orientation towards archaeology. When thinking of higher education aspirations, I knew I wanted history to be my primary focus of study, but also wanted to find a way to infuse some of my interests in a way that I haven’t seen depicted popularly. My proximity of the ocean and studying oceanography and related marine sciences influenced my worldview, with a mind towards oceans and water related things first. When I was browsing through old Crash Course World History YouTube videos hosted by John Green, he spoke of the work of underwater archaeologists. I was immediately wonder struck by how cool the concept of exploring human impacts as studied through the lens of archaeology and history in the aquatic world.

I have since undertaken the study of both history and archaeology, taking both kinds of classes most terms, and taking marine related classes for my remaining BaccCore (Introduction to Marine Biology, a forestry/wildlife class Foods from the Sea). Last spring I became a certified PADI Open Water Diver, and plan on continued development of this skill with the Advanced Open Water Diver course this coming fall.
